The Department of World Languages welcomes you to 海角登录入口. Our department offers courses in Spanish, French, and teaching English as a second language (TESL).

These courses will help you learn interpersonal and presentational skills in the target language. Courses also emphasize the cultures of related regions of the world to assist our graduates in becoming global leaders. Graduates with degrees from this department go on to find employment in a variety of fields, from healthcare and international business to education, translation, and interpretation. 

ESL Endorsement: Certified Arkansas teachers can add an endorsement in English to speakers of another language by completing the four courses listed below, earning a score 142 or higher on ESL Praxis 0361, and completing an application form with 海角登录入口's Licensure Officer, Dr.%20Leigh%20Anne%20Carter. All four courses are regularly offered online.

It is possible for licensed teachers anywhere in Arkansas to complete the courses required for the ESL endorsement.

Study Abroad: Minors are available in Spanish and teaching English as a second language. Students enrolled in either minor are eligible for the World Languages Study Abroad Scholarship with study-abroad destinations in Costa Rica, Spain and Mexico.

Certificates of Proficiency: Interested students can also obtain the Spanish Certificate of Proficiency for the Helping Professions or the TESL Certificate of Proficiency. Students who obtain the TESL Certificate of Proficiency or TESL Minor are also prepared to test for the ESL Endorsement.

Programs

 

Certificate of Proficiency (CP) in Spanish for the Helping Professions (9 hrs)

This 9-hour certificate of proficiency is designed for students in degree programs that help the greater community, such as psychology, social work, the health professions, and law enforcement. Click here to see the courses you'll need.


Spanish Minor (18 hrs)

This 18-credit hour minor is intended for non-majors interested in Spanish language and culture. Courses include Intermediate Spanish II, Spanish Grammar, and Advanced Composition. Students in this program are eligible for the World Languages Study Abroad Scholarship. Click here to view the degree plan.


TESL Minor (18 hrs)

Students will learn the basic skills required to teach ESL in non-public sectors worldwide and be able to more readily access higher education programs in TESL in the United States. Students obtaining the minor in TESL (18-hours) will also receive the Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Certificate of Proficiency. TESL Certificate of Proficiency (12 hrs)

This 12-hour certificate of proficiency is an excellent credential to possess, especially if you are planning to teach English overseas or anticipate working with individuals whose first language isn't English. Click here to view the degree plan.


TESL Endorsement (12 hrs)

Available to current 海角登录入口 students majoring in any field, this 12-credit hour program prepares students to take the State TESL Endorsement Exam, particularly valuable for current and future k-12 educators.
